Program

The welcome address from the Department of Neurosurgery at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Taif. The seminar will be introduced along with its importance for patients with Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor.

Dr. Shiban will present an overview of the Department of Neurosurgery at Lausitz – Carl Thiem University Hospital, outlining its academic structure, areas of specialization, and leading role in medical training and scientific research. He will also highlight the department’s vision for developing the functional neurosurgery unit for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor, and for strengthening international collaboration through scientific partnerships and joint initiatives.

Professor Alesch will speak about the medical indications for performing deep brain stimulation surgery, explaining the conditions for which this therapeutic intervention is recommended and the criteria that determine patient suitability. He will also review the patient evaluation pathway and the precise selection process to ensure the best therapeutic outcomes. In addition, he will provide a comprehensive overview of the expected benefits and the clinical considerations that precede the surgical decision.

Enjoy a coffee break and recharge your energy. Take the opportunity to meet others and build professional connections with fellow participants and specialists in this field.

The presentation will provide a simplified explanation of the stages of the deep brain stimulation surgical procedure, beginning with the preoperative preparation and the precise determination of the therapeutic target using advanced imaging, followed by the phase of stereotactic frame placement and defining the optimal trajectory to reach the targeted nucleus inside the brain. The key surgical steps for implanting the electrodes under precise monitoring will also be explained, followed by the stage of implanting the pulse generator under the skin and connecting it to the electrodes. The explanation concludes with the postoperative device programming phase and the gradual adjustment of settings to achieve the best therapeutic response for the patient.

After lunch, an open session will be held to receive participants’ questions and answer them in detail. This session aims to provide an interactive space for raising questions related to the seminar topics and discussing the clinical, surgical, and scientific aspects of movement disorders and available treatments. It also offers attendees the opportunity to engage directly with experts, benefit from their practical experience, and receive clear answers to their inquiries.
